A letter from our CEO
I come from a family of small business owners. I saw and experienced the challenges of running a family small business growing up. My dad ran the business, and my mom ran the books. I experienced the challenge of keeping track of business operations when I led central operations for a fleet of ten trucks in the food service industry early in my career. I spent a lot of time setting up systems and tools that made the business work (e.g., tracking profits, managing schedules, etc.). These were largely custom tools in spreadsheets because there wasn’t great software for managing profit and operations for the business.
I got more involved in trucking later while working at a payroll software company. We powered payroll software for all sorts of small businesses, and I led an effort to evaluate how to help trucking companies with payroll. When looking for trucking software partners, I was surprised by the poor quality of tools available for small trucking companies. Further, I was frustrated by some of the predatory practices in the trucking industry. It reminded me of the services that took advantage of my parents and their small business. I also deeply respected the hustle of the owner operators who built their businesses from the ground up.
That kicked off a year of getting to know truckers. I had family members who worked on the brokerage side of trucking, but I wanted to get to know the truckers, the owner operators, and the small fleet operators actually doing the work.
The more I got to know small operators, the more they reminded me of my parents–my dad working and my mom managing the books to keep their business on track. Before I knew it, I was diving headfirst into trucking.
When I heard stories of small operators spending one day each week managing invoices and paperwork, I immediately thought of my parents managing their business on nights and weekends. I also heard stories of the family member who runs the books for the trucking business on top of another full-time job and other family duties. I remember wishing my parents had better tools to manage their business so they could spend more time on what actually made them money and unplug when they’re home.
This journey led me to start Truckbase: to serve small operators with tools I wish my parents had growing up. Tools that are easy to use. Tools that save you time. Tools that help you make more money. Tools that are built for the operators doing the work.
Ultimately, we have the following goals for Truckbase:
1. Provide better tools for small trucking companies to succeed
2. Save truckers time, so they can spend more time on what matters
